I'm venturing to teach a bit of Plato to my Sophomores this year and have only a couple weeks (8 hrs./wk. class time). I would like some guidance regarding choosing excerpts. I'm currently unfamiliar with the work in its entirety and am hoping someone who is familiar will be happy to point me in the right direction. Which portions MUST I cover?

Thank you!

You MUST do the Myth of the Cave, which is at the beginning of Book VII, I believe.  The story of the Ring of Gyges is also helpful.  Depending on needs/interests, Plato's discussion of the various forms of government (books VIII-IX) is a good insight into the beginnings of political theory.  Plato's discussion of censorship in Book X, while generally misrepresented, is an important discussion of Truth in "fiction."

That's really helpful, Richard, many thanks! I'm eager to get started in a few weeks!
